As a child I enjoyed team sports with my older brother and his friends, on the streets of Long Island and Brooklyn, NY. Back then I was called a tomboy. With an interest in musical theatre later in my teens, I gravitated toward tap dancing and ballet. During my acting days, in my early 20s, I discovered aerobic dance through an exercise audio cassette tape by Jane Fonda. When I was acting on the road, Jane was right by my side. In my mid 20s, I also discovered gyms, aerobic classes and weights. By the time I hit 30, I found the exercise modality that kept me engaged for the next 35-years -- rebounding! And today, at 65-years young, rebounding, which is jumping on a mini trampoline, is my preferred cardio exercise. Why? Because it continues to bring out the kid in me, the let it all hang out part of me that turns exercise into fun; because I am now much more aware of the many health benefits of rebounding.
Rebounding is also good for what ails me!
When I was 60 years old, I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis. The lifestyle choices I made to change this diagnosis involved a more nutritious whole foods plant based diet, consistency with strength training, fitness walking on the beach wearing a weighted vest and rebounding, sometimes wearing a 2-lb weighted vest or holding 1-lb hand weights. I checked with my practitioners, first, to make sure it would be safe for me to embrace all of these modalities. It was. The result is I no longer have Osteoporosis. I have been downgraded to age-appropriate osteopenia. Note the upper case O for Osteoporosis and the lower case o for osteopenia. This is because one is a disease, the other is not. Who can say what percentage of each of these ingredients is most important to my journey? As my medical doctors told me, there is no way to determine this but one thing they all suggested I do was to keep on doing everything I am doing to maintain the osteopenia status.
